So which is better? Which gets more views? More engagement? That depends on your own, specific “video persona,” or video sweet spot.
Your Video Sweet Spot is your go-to or default video style. Some folks love live video, others prefer produced videos, while others eschew the camera altogether in favor of animation or screen share videos.
Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of Live vs. Recorded video:
LIVE: Live video is arguably the quickest and easiest route to a finished video. Facebook Live or Instagram Live make it almost effortless from a tech standpoint. And live videos (usually) require no editing or post production.
Live video is the ultimate “come as you are” party. Just a few taps on your mobile phone and you’re webcasting to the world!
Live video does require a bit of courage, though…
If we’re talking Facebook Live, it’s on-the-fly, and you can’t hide behind editing or special effects. But if you can get over your “videohobia,” live is a great way to get starting doing more video.
RECORDED or produced video, on the other hand, may require more pre and post-production. Recorded videos tend to be more scripted and more formal, with a greater expectation that the video will be higher quality, and (perhaps) contain better content than live video.
Produced videos also give you more room for production and editing. You can “clean up” your video and add titles, graphics, music and effects before you post it.
Produced videos also give you the additional flexibility to tackle “off-camera” videos, so you can create explainer videos, animated videos and screen capture videos.
I typically encourage my clients to explore different options and discover their own “video sweet spot,” whether it’s live or recorded videos. Often it’s best to start with Facebook Live and grow from there.
I’ve committed to doing a “Video a Day,” every day, in 2018. Often, my daily videos are Facebook Live videos, because those tend to be the lowest hanging fruit.
